In 2006 the University of Greifswald celebrated its 550th anniversary. At the beginning of the 21st century the university represents the successful synthesis of innovation and tradition. At present a future oriented profile is being worked out for the university in the following fields of competence:
Centres of research at the university are (Plasma) Physics, (Molecular) Biological Science offering two Collaborative Research Centres each. Another centre of research is that of culture of the Baltic Region offering an International Research Training Group. The University of Greifswald takes part in the Bologna Process.
In recent years the University of Greifswald has been independently and repeatedly rated among the top universities in Germany. It is indeed a perfect place to study and, last not least, to learn the German language. Since the mid 1990s the number of students at the University of Greifswald has more than tripled. Since 2008 approximately 12.000 students are studying at the university.
The university dominates Greifswald’s atmosphere. The Hanseatic town was founded in 1250 and has 53000 inhabitants. The students make Greifswald a young and vibrant town, and they are also a major economic factor. The university’s voice carries weight in questions of regional development.
The Ernst Moritz Arndt University is situated in one of the most beautiful regions in Germany. Close to the Baltic Sea and the Isles of Rügen, Hiddensee, and Usedom, this is where many Germans spend their holidays. Sailing and surfing can be done as recreation and for their studies many students do not only use the modern library but also the sunny beaches of the Greifswalder Bodden.
